Oh, Magnum, we've missed you.

Tom Selleck is back on your TV set...and even better, he's bringing his trusted old sidekick: the 'stache! Believe it or not (OK, you totally will), that's only the teensiest sliver of the reason why we recommend you check out Blue Bloods, CBS' intriguing new cop drama...

Blue Bloods (CBS)

Premieres: Friday, Sept. 24, 10 p.m.
Time-Slot Competition: Outlaw (NBC), 20/20 (ABC)
Cast: Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynihan, Will Estes, Len Carou
Status: We've seen the pilot...

Selleck brings his old moustache and a new gravitas to his role as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, head of a family dedicated to law and order. The Blue Bloods include his father, Henry (Carou), the former commish; eldest son Danny (Wahlberg), a detective; daughter Erin (Moynihan), an Assistant D.A.; and youngest son Jamie, a Harvard Law grad turned rookie cop; and they are all mourning their brother Joe, recently killed in the line of duty.

With the pedigree of show creators Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green (who wrote for The Sopranos), and the impressive cast, this series seems in good hands. And the intrigue of what really happened with brother Joe also proves a compelling throughline.

Verdict: Watch. It's your best bet for this time slot. Unless, wait, you don't have a life at 10 p.m. on Friday nights, do you? Pshaw!
