The Chaz Bono reality movie never quite panned out. But thanks to Oprah Winfrey, Sonny and Cher's offspring will be coming soon to the small screen.

Oprah's brand new cable network, OWN, has acquired the broadcast rights to Becoming Chaz, a documentary on the 41-year-old Bono's highly publicized sex change.

Here's the scoop...

E! News has learned that OWN picked up Becoming Chaz to anchor the launch of the net's documentary series.

Chaz, of course, was born Chastity Bono, the only child of the celebrity singer-songwriters. Chastity gained notoriety in the 1990s for penning two books about coming out of the closet as a lesbian. In 2008, she underwent gender reassignment and became Chaz, a transformation chronicled by Bono's cameras.

The movie was originally shopped to various interested outlets, but sources close to project speculated that the subject matter and Bono's lack of star power could make it a tough draw for some potential buyers.

Enter Oprah, whose OWN outbid the doc's other suitors.

Becoming Chaz explores his transition from female to male, the medial procedures involved and the complex emotions he dealt with on the way to reaching that profound decision. It will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival Jan. 23.

No word yet when OWN will air it.
