Kirsten Dunst Helps Send Handbag Heister Up the River

Jury convicts New York man of swiping pricey belongings from Spider-Man star's hotel suite

A New York man was found guilty today of breaking into Kirsten Dunst's hotel room in August, 2007 and making off with a $2,000 designer handbag and other pricey belongings.

The jury didn't buy James Jimenez's defense that he was just simply tagging along with a buddy and had nothing to do with the theft, and convicted him of burglary and criminal trespassing.

It was Dunst's testimony—along with a lack of a decent defense—that helped put Jimenez away.

Both the actress and Simon Pegg, who was shooting How To Lose Friends and Alienate People at the time of the handbag heist, took to the witness stand against Jimenez. It was the second time the stars had to put in face time in court—Jimenez's original jury deadlocked on the charges.

During this week's rerun trial, Dunst denied suggestions by the defense she and/or her assistant invited Jimenez and his friend, Jarrod Beinerman, into her penthouse suite at the SoHo Grand to buy weed. For that matter, the actress smacked down the idea she even smoked pot and testified that she didn't know the men. She said she had a Balenciaga purse, Marc Jacobs wallet and more than $2,000 in cash swiped from her room.

Pegg, meanwhile, said the perps walked off with his cell phone, iPod and a digital camera.

After the drug deal defense faltered, at one point, Jimenez's attorney tried to explain away his client's actions by telling jurors he was a "mongoloid."

Beinerman previously copped to the burglary charge and received four years behind bars. With today's conviction, Jimenez faces up to 15 years in prison. No word yet on a sentencing date.
