This was bound to happen to someone. It was only a matter of time. Japanese gymnast Kohei Uchimura, who is set to compete at the Olympics in Rio this year, got smacked with a phone bill just under $5,000. Why? Those dreadful roaming charges he acquired while playing Pokémon Go outside of his counties phone plan, Kyodo News notes. He became instantly sucked into the game after landing in Brazil for the games, as one naturally does. The gymnast, of course, was floored by his bill. One teammate, Kenzo Shirai commented, "He looked dead at the team meal that day." We don't blame the poor guy!
While there were some rumblings on Twitter the other day that Pokémon Go players haven't been able to catch anything at the Olympic Village, maybe something has changed between now and then? We're certainly hoping he didn't get charged for opening his app, only to discover there was nothing to catch. We couldn't even imagine dealing with that stress in addition to trying to focus on slaying your routine. Thankfully, the Olympic athlete worked out a deal with his phone company, which now allows him to pay a daily flat rate of about $30. Here's to using that good luck in the games!
