Not all of the blood in The Shallows was fake.
Blake Lively, who stars in the movie as a surfer fighting a shark while stranded on a rock in the ocean, reveals that one of her stunts went terribly wrong.
"There's a scene in the movie where I'm under [a rusty metal] buoy and I pull up and I crack my nose on the buoy and I have this bloody nose," Lively says. "That was not a part of the movie—that's something that happened while shooting!"
Ouch!
"That was real," Lively said. "I thought I was either going to pass out or like my nose was going to look like a Picasso painting or I was going to have a really, really cool scene. Luckily, we ended up with a cool scene."
And fortunately, her nose wasn't broken. "They would paint bruises and cuts on me every day for the first two weeks," Lively said. "After the first two weeks I was just covered in them myself."
Except for a few brief appearances by a handful of other actors, the movie is primarily a solo performance by Lively. Think James Franco in 127 Hours, but in an ocean with a very angry shark.
"It's a lot of me, a little too much for my liking, but...it's cool to have that opportunity, especially as a woman to have a character that's so strong and multifaceted and a role that's not only emotionally demanding but physically demanding," said Lively, who is pregnant with her and Ryan Reynolds' second child. "It's something that you see for the boys a lot. But to get to be a lady that goes toe-to-toe with an apex predator and she gets to be an apex predator herself, I mean that's cool."
The Shallows is in theaters tomorrow, June 24.
