Gwen Stefani isn't letting any problems in her personal life get in the way of her career; in fact, she's doing the opposite.
The No Doubt singer didn't want her divorce from Gavin Rossdale to negatively affect her songs, so she used her emotions to help her write a top-selling album. "I think that I just...I can't even find the words," the "Make Me Like You" singer said on Good Morning America Monday. "I felt like, 'Wow, I can't go down. This is not who I am. I'm not going to fail.'"
She continued, "I had to make something good out of it. So I tried to write because I know that that was my gift. And I was like, 'I'm going to do this. I'm going to make this into music.'"
The result was her latest album This Is What the Truth Feels Like. Although she addresses her split in songs such as "Red Flag" and "Used to Love You," Stefani also writes about her current relationship with country crooner Blake Shelton in "Make Me Like You," which she said Monday morning was one of her "favorite songs to write."
"It just came out. It was like, I had been feeling that way," she explained. "Like, it's just exactly what I felt that day...'I miss you right now. Here it is.' You know what I mean? And everybody in the room was just kind of like, 'Whoa, this is happening right now.' It was written fast. Like, 10, 15 minutes."
She and Shelton got together after she split from Rossdale and he split from Miranda Lambert. She admitted that her 13-year marriage coming to an end was one of the most difficult moments of her life, having her music as an outlet has helped get her through it.
"It feels like I'm supposed to be doing this right now and sharing my story...And I really hope that this record brings pleasure and, I don't know, documents people's, you know, lives in this moment. And I just—I'm so happy to share it," she said.
Stefani told Vanity Fair that she is "for sure" in love again and that the butterflies in her stomach also helped inspire her new album. "I feel like I'm in an amazing songwriting place; instead of being closed off, I'm thinking about positivity and how I can do something creative," she explained.
"I'm just doing what I want to do. It's so incredible to be in that zone. I'm always looking for the next song, and now I don't have to be insecure or write about heartache."
