The 2016 Golden Globes Were Basically an Ode to the '90s and We Loved Every Minute of It

Childhood crushes Christian Slater, Leonardo DiCaprio and so much crushed velvet ruled the night

Was it just us or did it seem like we were smack dab in the middle of the ‘90s while watching Sunday's Golden Globes? Are we back in the greatest decade of all time?! Someone bring us our Tamagotchis, our poster of Jonathan Taylor Thomas and our taped episode of Legends of the Hidden Temple!

We're talking about you favorite ‘90s heartthrobs, your favorite ‘90s fashions and a ‘90s movie couple reunion that made you long for the days of seeing Titanic four times in the theater, all in one night. It's official; the 2016 Golden Globes were essentially an ode to the ‘90s. Just look at the evidence:

1. Christian Slater's big night

Paul Drinkwater/NBC

He's been in the business for years and years, but with Mr. Robot's hype and his big win last night, Slater hasn't been this relevant and hip since you kissed his poster every night before going to bed in 1995.

2. So much crushed velvet on the carpet

You can't talk about the ‘90s without talking about velvet, you guys. And that trend was all over the place last night.

3. Brad Pitt's ‘90s heartthrob hairstyle

NBC

It was worthy of a Teen Beat magazine centerfold.

4. Sylvester Stallone's big win

Paul Drinkwater/NBC

He was the action star of the ‘90s, and you could not enter a movie theater without passing a movie poster featuring Sly with some kind of explosion in the background. Last night, he was back in the spotlight for his return to the world of Rocky Balboa.

5. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio reuniting

NBC

You know you shipped Kate and Leo so hard after seeing Titanic. Seeing Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater hugging each other during the Globes brought us right back to 1996 as we sobbed along to "My Heart Will Go On" during the credits. Speaking of Mr. DiCaprio...

6. Leo just won the entire night

NBC

He won a Golden Globe. He broke the Internet by merely hugging a former costar. And he was the star of the moment that launched a thousand GIFs (the reaction to Lady Gaga). Back in the ‘90s, Leo was your fantasy boyfriend and he was so in. In 2016, he's now your fantasy husband who hopefully will finally get that long overdue Oscar.

7. Kate Hudson's entire ensemble

The dress. The hair. Kate Hudson was peak ‘90s last night on the carpet and she slayed it.

8. Another ‘90s dreamboat had a big night

We're talking about Matt Damon, y'all! Everyone wanted to be the cheese in a Matt Damon-Ben Affleck sandwich back in 1998. And wouldn't you know it, Ben and Matt's long-running bro-ship came up last night.

9. Taraji P. Henson gave herself a catchphrase

NBC

"Did I do that?" "Not the mamma!" "How rude!" The ‘90s gave us a plethora of catchphrases that still haunt us to this day. And when Henson won a Globe for her role on Empire, she not only referenced that she's been waiting since the ‘90s for her time onstage, but she kind of gave herself a catchphrase: "You gonna wait!" And Will Smith, another '90s icon, loved her for it.

10. Channing Tatum's late ‘90s emo hairstyle

Not much to say after presenting the above photo. He looks like the lead singer of the band whose lyrics constantly pop up in your angst-y AIM away message.

Fingers crossed that this ‘90s trend continues for the Oscars! Maybe someone will bring back those teeny tiny butterfly clips. Lookin' at you, Brie Larson
