John Shearer/Getty Images for iHeartMediaA newly single Blake Shelton appeared jovial and made no mention of his love life as he performed a free concert in Nashville, but he did sing about heartbreak.
The 39-year-old country star and The Voice coach and fellow country singer Miranda Lambert, 31, announced in July they were divorcing after four years of marriage. In a recent interview, he said the two decided to "be cool" about their separation, adding, "We're buddies."
On Wednesday, Shelton performed an outdoor show in front of the headquarters of his record label, Warner Music Nashville, as part of the company's "Pickin' On The Patio" concert series.
At the show, Shelton, who is promoting his greatest hits album Reloaded: 20 #1 Hits, opened his one-hour set with the 2014 song "Neon Light," whose lyrics begin with the lines "Ever since you left me / I've been ridin' 'round / Crankin' up a little country gold heartbreak / Cried and dried these tears / I don't know how / Much more missin' you I can take."
He followed the track with his 2008 ballad "She Wouldn't Be Gone."
Shelton often joked with the crowd.
"Look at these country music freaks out here, man!" he said. "I love it."
"Let me tell you something, I'm shocked and honored that this many people came out here tonight," he added. "This calls for a drink man, come on. To country music!"
He later sang songs such as "Red, "Hillbilly Bone," "Sure Be Cool If You Did" and "Austin."
"Here's what I'm suggesting, for all you Tennessee redneck dudes. If you brought your girl or your wife along tonight, or if you're flirting with someone thinking about something not so stupid to say, turn to her and look her in the eye and sing these words to this song," he said, before launching into "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking."
"This is like a party. This is like a real party. Not a stiff music industry event. It's a full on country music party," Shelton told the crowd, joking, "I gotta start drinking more."
