Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning, is that you?!

The 16-year-old actress looked unrecognizable while filming scenes for her new movie Three Generations in NYC on Monday.

In the film, Fanning plays a transgender teen who is transitioning from female to male. For the complex role, Fanning sported a costume that consisted of baggy black pants and an oversize green jacket with gloves, yellow boots and a striped beanie. Fanning, who wore no makeup while filming, also sported a new dark short hairdo, a far departure from her signature long blond hair.

Fanning spent the day filming scenes on a skateboard at a Brooklyn skate park. In between takes, Fanning was spotted laughing and smiling while hard at work.

Three Generations also stars Naomi Watts, who plays Fanning's mother, and Susan Saradon. The film follows Fanning's transition and Watts' journey to come to terms with having a transgender child.

Before filming started, Fanning debuted a new brunette look back in September. She told E! News she dyed it for her film Trumbo and explained the darker 'do has her feeling "a little more serious."

"I'm so used to having the blond hair," she said of the change. "I've had it my whole life so it's very strange."
