Chad Johnson has just scored himself a criminal case.

The State Attorney's Office in Broward County, Fla., confirms to E! News that it has charged the former Miami Dolphins wide receiver and VH1 reality star with misdemeanor battery stemming from his domestic violence bust last month when he purportedly roughed up his now-estranged wife, Evelyn Lozada.

Johnson, formerly Chad Ochocinco, could face up to a year behind bars.

The footballer got into this mess on Aug. 11 when his newlywed Basketball Wives bride reportedly discovered a box of condoms. During the ensuing argument, Johnson allegedly headbutted Lozada ,who sustained a laceration to her forehead.

Chad was subsequently taken into custody by Davie police who booked him for domestic violence before releasing him on $2,500 bond.

Shortly after the incident, Lozada filed for divorce from the NFL star, 40 days after their lavish July 4 wedding, which was chronicled by their reality series, Ev and Ocho (VH1 has since axed the program).

On the same day Evelyn sought to end their union, Johnson, 34, issued a public apology and thanked fans for his support. But that didn't stop the Dolphins from dropping him from the team.

Still hoping to reconcile with his missus, Johnson went out and inked a tattoo of Lozada's face on his right leg, which he showed off on the Hard Knocks finale that aired on Sept. 4.

His arraignment is set for Thursday morning, and according to the State Attorney, he's expected to file a written plea of not guilty but will not be in court.
