Ricky Gervais knows what it's like to host an awards show in the age of Twitter.

It's brutal.

So what does the British comic have to do with Billy Crystal's ninth stint hosting the Academy Awards?

Apparently Gervais thinks he'll get the blame for the fact that Crystal's performance wasn't a hit.

How so? Let The Office creator explain in a Monday morning tweet: "The media… 2011 Globes 'Gervais was too cruel' 2012 Globes 'Gervais was too nice' 2012 Oscars 'Crystal was too…I blame Gervais.' ha ha."

See, it's his fault. One Twitter user agreed, "I blame you whenever anything isn't funny."

Another fan had Gervais' back from the comic's self-launched attack, tweeting, "At least you made the Globes watchable. Oscars were so boring and unfunny."

While the show's ratings were up from last year, the criticism of Crystal was harsh. The 63-year-old actor's performance was called "painful," "bland as oatmeal" and "lame." The Los Angeles Times is even conducting a poll to determine, "What was Billy Crystal's lamest joke?"

Hey, you can't win 'em all. But when in doubt, just blame Ricky Gervais!
