Steven Avery, Lynn Hartman,

Making a Murderer's Steven Avery has ended his whirlwind engagement after one week.

The 54-year-old—who is serving life in prison for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach—called things off with Lynn Hartman because "she is a golddigger."

Avery's friend and former fiancée Sandra Greenman took to Facebook on his behalf, writing, "I have a statement that I need passed around to groups. Steve called me two times tonight and wants everyone to know that Lynn and him are done. She has been in this relationship for money and publicity. His eyes are finally opened!!!"

Greenman continued, "Lynn received at least $5000 from Dr. Phil, and he thinks more. She got another $1000 for doing other shows. She also wanted to be on as many as possible."

Per his own words, she wrote, "She is a golddigger. He wants someone to contact Dr Phil before Mon. show annd (sic) let him know she was only in the relationship for money. I checked and doublechecked with him to make very sure he wanted this put on and he said very much so."

Avery's niece, Carla Chase, also released a statement on behalf of her uncle and the rest of their family.

"These things happen. Bumps in the road... but we carry on holding our heads high," she wrote. "We appreciate your concerns & desire to discuss recent developments regarding Steven, but it's once again time to move forward. We're opening this thread and this one alone, to discuss Dr. Phil's airing of Lynn and Steven today and tomorrow, and will be closing discussion on all other posts relating to Lynn. This thread will also be closed sometime this week...Please be respectful to all members & remember that we are here to support the guys.. Thank you for your continued support & we will get thru this together as a extended family. Love you all."

Meanwhile, Hartman met Avery after she began writing to him earlier this year. The two fell in love and announced their engagement in September, opening up about their relationship on Dr. Phil in an episode that is set to air Monday and Tuesday.

In a teaser for the show, Dr. Phil asked Hartman if it was "love at first write." She told him that they said "I love you" after they heard each other's voices for the first time on the phone.

Avery—who called in for an interview on the show—confessed his love with Hartman is nothing like he's ever felt. "I haven't been in love my whole life. It's not the same as the others. Everything is all different with her."

In fact, Avery wanted to tie the knot with Hartman as soon as possible, hoping his conviction would be overturned like his nephew Brendan Dassey's earlier this year.

He explained, "The truth is coming out and sooner or later, all the truth will come out. I want to wait until I'm out [to get married] and I don't think that'll be too long; right around the corner."
