California collectors Gary Zimet and Eric Gazin are selling to the highest bidder the list German industrialist Oskar Schindler compiled with 801 names of workers he said were essential to his factory during World War II, thus saving them from being sent to concentration camps.
The starting bid is $3 million, though Zimet and Gazin hope to get upwards of $5 million. So, how did this end up on a site where you can buy used video games, cell phone chargers and mustache stickers?
It's important to note that there are four copies of Schindler's List total (two located in Israel's Yad Vashem and one in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C.). This is one copy, but not a knockoff, if you follow.
The document, dated April 18, 1945, was typed by Schindler's accountant, Itzhak Stern. "Stern gave the list to his nephew, who sold it to a private collector in 2011," Zimet told The New York Post. "Now this collector wishes to sell it."
"We decided to sell the list on eBay because it has over 100 million worldwide members, and this is a global story," Gazin explained. "There are billionaires using the site, wealthy celebrities. We like the platform."
The auction is restricted to pre-approved buyers ("in order to ensure the validity and sincerity of bids") and the site reads, "Don't miss your chance to own a piece of history that has inspired many on the difference one person can make in the face of great danger." (Schindler saved more than 1,000 Jews from Nazis, total.)
(P.S. If you have one to sell, eBay advertises that you can "Sell it yourself!" But you don't. Because there are only four.)
"This exceedingly rare original Schindler's List is the only one ever on the market," the auction says of the onion skin paper. "It is 14 pages in length and lists 801 male names, dated April 18, 1945. It is guaranteed authentic." The auction ends in nine days, July 28.
