The fall 2013 runways showed an overwhelming amount of luxurious touches that maintained a nonchalant attitude that was more simple, less sensational. Fabrics were rich to the touch, but pared down for every day. Badgley Mischka, Vera Wang, Theyskens' Theory, Proenza Schouler and Carolina Herrera all carried out this trend with panache.
Everywhere we looked we saw furs of all forms! Coats, chubbies, capelets, vests and more were plush, lavish and lovely to look at. Vera Wang, Rachel Zoe, Herve Leger and J. Mendel all incorporated stunning pieces into their collections.
It's time to get slick, ladies! Leather was a major theme of the runways (as seen at Alexander Wang, J. Mendel, Michael Kors and more) and we're happy to report that it can be interpreted in various forms, even mixed with other fabrications like fur or suede. Leather jackets, leggings, skirts and pleated pants are all well worth the investment next season.
Rich and sultry, this berry-hued shade popped up at Derek Lam, Tory Burch, Jason Wu, Marc by Marc Jacobs, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Victoria by Victoria Beckham and countless others.
Forget unforgiving body-conscious silhouettes—it's all about swingy retro shift dresses and boxy jackets (color-blocked, tweed, houdstooth or plaid) for fall! Victoria by Victoria Beckham, rag & bone, Anna Sui, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler all sent this playful shape down the runway.
Black was back and better than ever! Nearly every designer from Reem Acra to Edun showed a heavy dose of the somber shade for a downtown edge that felt modern and chic.
Nubby oversized knits and roomy coats seen at Theyskens' Theory, Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim and others indicated that fall 2013 is all about laidback simplicity. "We call it cocooning, where thick knits and heavy textures just envelope the body," explained Sharon Graubard, Senior Vice President Fashion Director of StyleSight.
A refreshing update to outerwear, the cape commanded our attention on the runway, as seen at Derek Lam, Tibi and others. Polished, pretty and playful, capes are a perfect piece to add into your wardrobe.
Camo prints and edgy army attitude came in all forms including posh fur coats, dramatic skirts, belted jackets and a strong presence of army green everywhere. Michael Kors, Rachel Roy, Charlotte Ronson, Rebecca Minkoff and Prabal Gurung all toughened up their collections with this classic concept.
Makeup was kept simple and undone over all, save for a stained wine lip (as seen at Zac Posen, Vera Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Marc by Marc Jacobs) or an intentionally smudgy eye.
The pretty neutral shade made a major comeback at New York Fashion Week, seen at Rachel Zoe collection, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Derek Lam.
We spotted a number of runways (including Jenny Packham) with models wearing their hair low, pulled back and parted down the center. This fuss-free look felt clean and modern for the city girl on the go!
