Down is very nearly out. In a last-ditch attempt to straighten out upper-crust malcontent Igby (Kieran Culkin), his family sends him to military school. Soon AWOL, he heads for New York to mingle with a bizarre cast of characters, including Amanda Peet as a drugged-out trophy girlfriend, Jared Harris as a cross-dressing performance artist, and Claire Danes as a "been there, done that" city kid.
The film meanders, however, without delivering much impact, and suffers from an unwieldy, overly showy ensemble cast--featuring Ryan Phillippe, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. Still, this wannabe dark comedy manages to solicit sympathy for the privileged, which is perhaps the only truly unexpected thing that it has to offer.
