Ryan Murphy and co. are keeping the theme of American Horror Story season six under wraps—like, it's so top-secret that they've produced nearly two dozen promos for the new season and the majority are red herrings.
But the Internet's finest detectives have been on the case for a while now—and they've possibly finally discovered what the theme will be. Well, they've possibly finally discovered what the title is, at least.
According to sleuths, both RottenTomatoes.com and TV Guide magazine have listed the newest installment of the horror anthology as American Horror Story: The Mist (although RottenTomatoes has since removed the potential spoiler).
"The Mist" is the name of one of the many teasers FX has released to promote the new season, and features a gross creature emerging from the distance while scuttling down some mist-covered railroad tracks.
While that's not exactly evidence of a theme, per se, it could be anything from a nod to the Stephen King novella of the same name (about a mist that envelops a small town and brings with it scary supernatural creatures) to a sort-of description of how the season will begin.
Here's what we do know: Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Lady Gaga and Evan Peters will all be back, among several other players from Murphy's AHS talent pool that have not yet been announced.
"They went out and made many more trailers than you've actually seen for...different genres and different places," FX president John Landgraf teased when asked about the marketing campaign for season six. "I just love it on an artistic level. One of them is accurate, the others are all misdirects."
We'll find out the theme for sure when American Horror Story returns Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. on FX.
