Freshman cool-kid Glee today ruled the school with 19 nominations, the most of any prime-time series, as Emmy voters for a change embraced, well, change.
Modern Family, Nurse Jackie, True Blood and Friday Night Lights were other new big-time nominees.
Glee, Modern Family and Nurse Jackie will battle it out for Outstanding Comedy Series, which, in very rare Emmy fashion, only has two returning nominees from last year: The Office and defending champ 30 Rock. The category is rounded out by perennial favorite Curb Your Enthusiasm.
With 14 overall nominations, first-year hit Modern Family is second only to Glee among comedy series. Edie Falco's Nurse Jackie is the other top comedy nominee, with eight.
Now in its third season, True Blood gets its first taste of a marquee Emmy race with a nod for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, defending-champ Mad Men, Lost, Breaking Bad and Dexter are all holdover nominees, while The Good Wife is the only other first-timer.
The viewer-starved Friday Night Lights, meanwhile, fattened up with four nominations, including two key ones for stars Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.
While, on the whole, Emmy voters mixed things up more than usual, they resisted sending old favorites off on ice floes: Mad Men notched the most nominations for a drama series, with 19; 30 Rock wasn't too far off from Glee, with 15; the outgoing Lost came away with 12.
The HBO World War II miniseries The Pacific earned the most nominations of any show, with a whopping 24.
Per usual, HBO topped all networks with 101 nods. ABC had bragging rights for broadcast nets with 63 nominations, followed by CBS (57), NBC (48) and Fox (47).
The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to be presented Aug. 29.
