Sex symbol Marilyn Monroe basically invented the timeless red lip.
"Nowadays, the bold lip is every busy woman's (or man's) best friend. If you're going out after work or need to elevate your outfit in a pinch, the classic red lip makes a statement without too much fuss. I prefer to modernize the look with a matte lipstick or pencil, like Lorac Pro Matte Color in Ruby or Nars Velvet Lip Pencil in Cruella. Bonus points for pigments with a little bit of orange-y tones for that subtle surprise."—Diana Nguyen, ESC Editor
Brigitte Bardot's infamous 1960s pale pucker was characteristically low-key glam.
"I'm usually more a fan or coral and pink lipsticks, so nude seemed a bit daunting for me. When I first put it on, I was afraid that my lips would totally blend in with the rest of me, but after a while the matte shade really grew on me. This Twiggy-inspired lip shade may become part of my regular lipstick rotation. To get my look, I lined my lips with Sigma Beauty Final Touch Inner Rim Brightner, followed by a base of Glamnation Lipstick in Skyclad and a top layer of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Metallic Gloss in Hollywood."—Lindsey Sirera, Style Writer
Sarah Michelle Gellar slayed the frosted lip trend in the late '90s.
"I'm a really big advocate of bronze beauty looks in general, (it's really easy to do and generally tough to mess up). I know it's geeky, but I grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was always envious of Buffy's epic frosted lipstick. To update the look, I ditched the butterfly clips and chunky highlights, focusing just on copper-all-over makeup. For my lips I started with a base of Black Opal's In The Buff and glazed with a top coat of Butter London's Lippy Shimmer Gloss in Pip Pip."—Taylor Stephan, Associate Writer
Britney Spears rocked her signature tan and clear gloss lips circa the early aughts.
"Lip balm is my daily go-to, so when I want to glam it up I opt for gloss. I really love Chantecaille's Brilliant Gloss in Shine for a no-fuss clear finish that makes my lips appear fuller. I tend to avoid any makeup that requires serious touch-ups during the day—a simple swipe of gloss (and a summer tan) is all I need to go from a beach day to cocktail hour with friends." —Kailey Harless, Social Media Associate
Jennifer Lopez led the heavily-lined lips charge in the hip-hop days of the '90s and early 2000s.
"When I think of an exaggerated lipliner I immediately think of 1997 Jennifer Lopez—but luckily there are some fun ways to translate this look from '90s to now. The key is to lightly blend in the liner all around the lip. It creates a more natural-looking ombre color. To get a warm coco color I generously lined my lips with LA Girl Semi Permanent Auto Lipliner in Natural and coated my lips in Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Gothica, a really deep, glittery shade that can be rocked for any occasion!" —Jenna Loomer, Branded Content Manager
Rooney Mara wrote the book on breaking red-carpet rules, starting first with her modern-day crimson pout.
"I'm obsessed with layering different lipstick shades to make my own custom hues, which is exactly what I did to achieve the vampy, so-dark-it's-nearly-black lip that I think of as the ‘Rooney Mara.' I swiped on some of Urban Decay's Sheer Shame Lipstick (a glossy berry red) as the base, before adding Maybelline's Divine Wine (a favorite of mine and Chrissy Teigen's) to deepen the color into a bold Bordeaux. Then I dabbed a straight-up black lipstick (Glam Nation's Manic Panic lipstick in Nosferatu) to kick the gothic glamour up a notch. Another two coats of Divine Wine sealed the deal—giving me the perfect Mara-fied mouth."—Nicole Adlman, Style Writer
Emma Stone owns this generation's pink-on-pale red carpet trend.
"I chose a bold eyeliner and cat eye for this look because the lip color is so fun and playful. The color also felt a little edgy to me so I was inspired to go a little glam on my eyes. I used a nude shadow so it wouldn't compete with my eyeliner, and decided matte all over, including my lip, which I swiped with Topshop's Lipstick in Tease and glossed over with Obsessive Compolsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Yaoi. I would probably wear this anywhere except work." —Kristin Sugden, Digital Producer
