J.R. Martinez, Karina Smirnoff, DWTS ABC/ADAM TAYLOR

Dancing With the Stars' newest champion didn't even need to hoist the mirror-ball to be deemed a winner.

It's a fluke that J.R. Martinez, a former U.S. Army infantryman, is even alive today after 40 percent of his body was severely burned in a landmine explosion while he was serving in Iraq in 2003. But what he's done since—get back into fighting shape, travel the country as a motivational speaker and land a role on All My Children—has been the stuff of fairytales.

Let's just say that J.R. is No. 1 when it comes to deserving that win last night. Even better, he was a really good dancer. But...he wasn't the best, technically.

The 18-year-old Johnson, voice quivering at times, recounted her reaction upon hearing that 36-year-old Robert O'Ryan was caught sneaking onto the CBS lot last spring where DWTS tapes, allegedly packing a so-called kidnapping kit including two guns, a knife, duct tape, zip ties and love letters in which their last names were hyphenated.

The news chilled her.

Shawn Johnson isn't doing backflips—at least not yet.

DWTS, Helio Castroneves ABC/Carol Kaelson
More from Marc Malkin

The producers of Dancing With the Stars need to start paying more attention to their balls—disco balls, that is.

As we exclusively revealed last year in our very hard-hitting investigative reporting (natch), the champion disco ball trophies aren't exactly high quality. Cheryl Burke and Shawn Johnson were the first to admit their trophies had to be repaired after they began to fall apart.

Now, season five's cha-cha champ, race-car driver Helio Castroneves, has come forward with a similar story...
