It is never too early in the year to start talking about next year's Oscar race or the newest, hottest face on the planet.

We're smack in the middle of the best-of-2011 awards season, the 2012 Sundance Film Festival kicks off today (and runs till Jan. 29) in Park City, Utah, and there is so much going on both onscreen and off, we felt it necessary to prepare a cheat sheet for the indie-film extravaganza.

Here's what—and who—will be making noise in the next 10 days:

Feud Alert: Who's Calling Sean Penn a "Communist A--hole"?

Sean Penn ended up with way more than his luggage after landing at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday.

The star got quite an earful from his onetime costar Maria Conchita Alonso.

While the actress was picking up her mother from a Miami flight, she happened to spot the Oscar winner in baggage claim and decided to confront him regarding his support of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Not surprisingly, it wasn't exactly the most cordial of conversations...

Morning Mail! The Blake & Leo Ex Games Are On! So Who's Winning?

More from The Awful Truth

Dear Ted:
I am a Leonardo DiCaprio-Blake Lively fan but even I thought those Leo-Erin Heatherton park pics were staged as were the Blake and Ryan Reynolds park pics. C'mon Leo's been in hiding since forever down in Australia, now we have clear shots of him and a beautiful blonde looking cozy in an empty park? What's the story here? Point scoring?
A

Dear Ex Games:
I'll admit, the pap pics of both these couples looked a little too par-fait, but that doesn't mean both couples aren't the real deal. Leo's simply back to his old ways and Blake's moved on to someone hotter. But we wouldn't be surprised it Leo wasn't inspired to reveal his new gal with all the puppy love photos of Blake and Ryan. The timing is just too good.

Dear Ted:
Let's be real about Kristen Stewart. I hope she's invested her millions wisely because I think once all the Twilight hullabaloo is over, so will her career as a leading lady. She only became famous because Twilight fans regarded her as the real-life embodiment of their fave heroine, not because of her "talent." She seriously plays every single character the exact same way—awkward pauses, lip-biting and hair twirling, included. Once the Twi-hards move on, it'll be back to indie films no one sees for Kristen.

Nearly two years after he first went to Haiti to help after a devastating earthquake, Sean Penn is still just as determined as ever to see positive changes take root in the disaster-ravaged nation.

So, with the idea of raising mucho dinero in mind, the two-time Oscar winner and a bunch of his famous pals have shot a new PSA—obtained first by E! News—to encourage folks to get involved with the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, founded by Penn in the wake of the 2010 earthquake that displaced millions of people.

The list of people onboard with the cause of course reads like a red carpet rundown...

Gotham Awards Torn Between Tree of Life and Beginners

Tree of Life Fox Searchlight
More from red_carpet

At tonight's 21st Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards ceremony in New York City's Cipriani Wall Street, we learned one thing: When it comes to choosing whether it's best to see Sean Penn remember the innocence of his childhood, while trying to reconcile with papa Brad Pitt or seeing Ewan McGregor's character deal with the death of his father and finding out he had a young gay lover, we can't.

Or at least, the Independent Filmmaker Project couldn't.

Ben Stiller, Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Jack Black…Bill Clinton? Who's Stealing Sean Penn's Lunch?!

The world is full of problems—war, famine, drought, poverty, fellow celebrities stealing Sean Penn's brown bag lunch. The injustices just don't stop!

Enter the Clinton Foundation's Celebrity Division, which has come up with some, uh, creative, actionable initiatives to stop the global inequities…or at least the one about Penn's missing sandwiches.

The hilarious video, first shown Saturday night at the Decade of Difference concert honoring President Bill Clinton's charitable works, was released this morning on FunnyorDie.com. Presumably because the ideas Ben Stiller, Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Jack Black, Ted Danson and Kevin Spacey float around on totally inappropriate softball league mascots, how to ban breathing, and, of course, the importance of theme songs, aren't the kind of gems that should be kept from the public.

Of course, the biggest laugh is saved for the big man himself—but we won't spoil it for you. Check out the clip, and sit tight—the payoff is worth it.
