The Tonight Show host and NBC are being sued by a Sikh man who accuses Leno of insulting one of the religion's holiest shrines during a monologue last week.
And what's the insult according to the suit?
On Leno's Jan. 19 broadcast, the 61-year-old funnyman quipped that "the Harmindir Sahib, or Golden Temple of Armritsar in India was the summer vacation home of Republican candidate, Mitt Romney."
While the skit seemed intended to skewer Romney over his riches, that didn't go over well at all with Dr. Randeep Dhillon, the plaintiff who brought the suit on behalf of the Bol Punjabi All Regions Community Organization.
According to the complaint, the jab was not only "libelous on its face," but also "hurt the sentiments of all Sikh people."
"[Leno's joke] clearly exposes plaintiff, other Sikhs and their religion to hatred, contempt, ridicule and obloquy because it falsely portrays the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh," reads court papers.
Dhillon is asking a Los Angeles Superior Court to award him judgment for unspecified general, specific and punitive damages and court costs.
Attorneys for Dhillon and Leno could not be reached for comment.
