More from The Awful Truth

Whitney Houston's cause of death is still unknown, though that hasn't stopped many from weighing in. And if you listen to some very vocal—and very angry—fans, all the blame could be put on one man: Whitney ex-husband Bobby Brown.

Not so, says a close friend to the late singer, who's known Whitney since before she met the New Edition singer in 1989: "Bobby Brown did not start Whitney Houston on a road that led to her death."

How Much Was Whitney Houston Worth When She Died?

Whitney Houston Ron Galella/WireImage

Didn't she almost have it all?

Whitney Houston sold more than 200 million albums and singles, and she had 11 No. 1 songs—including, of course, "I Will Always Love You," which spent 14 weeks on top. The Bodyguard won the Grammy for Album of the Year and remains the best-selling soundtrack of all time.

The pioneering diva commanded a $10 million paycheck for The Preacher's Wife in 1995. She signed a then-record $100 million contract with Arista Records in 2001. Her 2010 Nothing but Love tour grossed $36 million.

But the superlatively talented artist also went through a messy divorce and spent years battling addiction to drugs and alcohol.

So, in the end, how much of that fortune remained when she died Saturday?

Diane Warren, the Grammy-winning songwriter who penned the album's "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," remembers their first day in the studio...

Whitney Houston Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
More from The Awful Truth

We first told you how we caught up with Jordin Sparks last month at the Critics Choice Awards, where she gushed over working with Whitney Houston in the movie Sparkle, Whit's final project before her passing.

But instead of hinting at Whitney's turmoil, Jordin expressed just the opposite—smiling and gushing over her idol's positive and hardworking attitude on set.

And to be honest, we're fairly surprised (and skeptical) to hear there wasn't a single indication Whit may not have been doing as well as she appeared.

So, did other Sparkle sources echo the same sentiment?

The tragedy of losing a legendary superstar is still hard to accept, and for Chaka Khan it's no different. But the singer-songwriter who called Whitney Houston her "little sister," revealed on Piers Morgan Tonight that she thinks Houston's death could have been prevented.

Piers Morgan brought up the point of Houston, who was a "well-documented addict" being seen in public drinking alcohol during her last days of life, which led Chaka Khan to state, in her opinion, who was to blame.
