Knocked Around: Heigl Takes On Apatow

Knocked Up Universal Pictures

So, here's the quote, straight from the Katherine Heigl's mouth, as printed in Vanity Fair. She's talking about her work in Judd Apatow's miraculously funny romantic comedy Knocked Up:

It was hard for me to love [Apatow's movie] because it's a little sexist…It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys.

I gotta say I disagree. If anything, Apatow nails the general pluses and minuses of each sex. Boys are good at mellowing out and getting stoned. Girls are good at setting alarm clocks and nagging men. Obviously, the battle of the sexes isn't that simple. I mean, I know Back to the Future as well as any dude, but I still laughed when Heigl and her sister didn't know about Doc Brown and the DeLorean.

Moreover, Leslie Mann's character was neither "humorless" nor "uptight." The way I saw it, she was just reacting to her husband's (Paul Rudd) antics. Like, if you find out your husband is sneaking out to play fantasy baseball, it's normal to get a wee bit shrewy. Uh-oh. Maybe that makes me a shrew.

But wait a second. Does Heigl not remember the scene where Mann's character goes off on the bouncer who won't let them in? That was brave and funny and every girl I know loved it.

Now, it's your turn. Tell us what you think.
