The name Tom Cruise is shorthand for A-list celebrity–with the flashy rides (hello, personal jet), the mysterious personal belief system (hello, Scientology) and the requisite litany of famous exes (goodbye, Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes).
He's also an incredibly talented actor and consistent box-office draw.
The Golden Globe winner's underwear-and-dress-shirt antics in the 1983 film Risky Business launched Cruise to stardom. And in films as varied as Top Gun and Rain Man, the man with the mega-watt smile rarely fails to shine.
Between 2000 and 2010, nine out of 10 of Tom's films grossed more than $100 million. The muscular Mission: Impossible star has gained notoriety for doing many of his own stunts–making Cruise the most well-paid stunt man in Hollywood.
But it's some of his off-camera stunts that have gained the most media attention. Cruise famously professed his love to Katie Holmes by hopping up and down like a toddler on Oprah's couch.
The three-time Oscar nominee's apparent love-struck behavior became so bizarre that Paramount Pictures ended its 14-year relationship with the Jerry Maguire star, with studio boss Sumner Redstone declaring his actions and views had become "creative suicide."
The split was not the first the War of the Worlds star has weathered. After a failed marriage to actress Mimi Rogers, who is credited with introducing Tom to Scientology in 1989, Cruise married his Days of Thunder costar Nicole Kidman in 1990. The couple adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. Tom filed for divorce from Nicole in 2001.
After a brief romance with Penelope Cruz, Tom and Katie Holmes started dating in 2005 and TomKat was born.
The Eyes Wide Shut star taught his new girlfriend all about Scientology and even had mentors accompany her to help immerse her in the religion. In 2006, their daughter, Suri Cruise was born and the couple tied the knot later that year.
Amid speculation that Tom was too controlling over Holmes and that he was forcing her and their daughter into Scientology, Katie filed for divorce in 2012.
Cruise continues his role as a bona fide movie star, and his Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol making nearly $700 million worldwide.
