The 2016 Tony Awards were a night to remember, making history and breaking records while also providing the audience with incredible performances and touching speeches by some of the biggest names on Broadway.
And, as is always the case for any of these big nights, after the party comes the after-party!
Many stars—including the show's host, James Corden—celebrated the evening by attending different events around New York City, partying into the wee hours of the morning.
One of the biggest winners of the evening, Hamilton, threw a celebration at Tavern on Green. A source tells us of the soirée, "It was a great dance party. It was a viewing party and then everyone who was at the awards came. Jake Gyllenhaal, Barbra Streisand, Michelle Williams, Common and James Corden were there."
The insider added, "People were dancing up a storm...It was a free-flowing party with lots of love and great energy. [Lin-Manuel Miranda] is a man of the people. There was a lot of wacky selfie-taking going on. People passing their Tony's around. It went into the wee hours and we watched the sun come up over Central Park. It was an amazing, rowdy time."
The Color Purple was another big winner of the night and celebrated properly by hosting a party at Hudson Terrace.
"Danielle Brooks, Cynthia Erivo, Harvey Weinstein and Candy Spelling were there," a second source tells us of the extravaganza. "But party really started when Oprah [Winfrey] walked in waving the Tony award in the air. Everyone went crazy and the crowds just parted. Everyone wanted a picture with her, and she was so gracious about it. She took as many as humanly possible. It was a great time."
The School of Rock also threw a get-together at Howl at the Moon, which Andrew Lloyd Webber and Glenn Close attended. "Andrew got on stage and thanked everyone for coming," an insider reveals.
"The best part was the kids from the show. They all came up and performed their favorite songs. One did 'Purple Rain,' one did a Beatles song. One [even] did a tune from Ben Folds Five. It was fantastic. They're so talented!"
Several other celebrations also took place, including the DKC/O&M Co. annual after-party at the Baccarat Hotel where celebrities like Victoria Justice, Diane Lane, Julian Fellowes, George C. Wolfe and Brian Stokes Mitchell partied the night away.
The 2016 Tony Awards came at a somber time, following the Orlando shootings on Saturday night during which more than 50 people were killed and 50 injured. Producers dedicated the show to the victims' loved ones.
"Our hearts are heavy for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando," they said in a statement Sunday. "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected. The Tony Awards dedicate tonight's ceremony to them."
