Cannes is a wild good time. You're in the south of France! The weather is beautiful! You're stuffed full of croissants and baguettes and you've had an entire bottle of champagne and it's not even noon! You're among the most beautiful and most successful members of Hollywood!
But Cannes can (see what we did there?) also be a giant downer of a film festival. It is run by the French, after all, and they are very particular about how things go. If we uncultured and unrestrained Americans are going to come into their country we're going to play by their rules.
And that means always being dressed to the nines, properly-heeled footwear included. It means not taking our "grotesque" American selfies. It means definitely not showing up with a baguette sticking out of your purse, afternoon snack plans be damned.
But alas, every year a few rebellious celebrities decide to eschew all authority and show up however they damn please. And today, we honor them.
Julia Roberts
A ban on flats? Julia Roberts took it one step further and just said "screw you" to shoes altogether. If you're going to tell her what to wear on her feet, she's going to show up barefoot. And she's going to look damn good doing it, mind you.
Kristen Stewart
Exhibit B why the heels-only rule is unnecessary: This outfit. How silly would she look if she threw on a pair of stilettos just because Cannes said so? Girl's gonna walk comfortably, thankyouverymuch.
Lily-Rose Depp
Teens, man. They're rebels—especially when they're a biological product of one super-rebel Johnny Depp. We would say that it's great to see Lily-Rose really coming into her own here by wearing a sweatshirt on the red carpet, but it's not really surprising at all. Kudos, dear.
Susan Sarandon
Okay, so there probably isn't an explicit rule against sunglasses on the red carpet. But just look at Sus! She perfectly embodies the spirit of rule breaking—we'll take her party over the official Cannes party any day.
Eva Longoria
Eva, what did the people of Cannes tell you about your grotesque selfies? Of course, the definition of "grotesque" is up for discussion here, because we do believe that is a gorgeous self-portrait being taken. But rules are rules.
The Trolls
If you can't wear flat shoes then this hair definitely has to be a faux pas. Cannes organizers, what say you?
