It's Leap Day! An on this joyous occasion, it's important to reflect on the most precious gifts this life has brought us. First and foremost is the 30 Rock Leap Day episode. No earthly bounty can compare.
The beloved Tina Fey show was never stingy when it came to holiday-themed episodes (let's take a second to pour one out for Ludachristmas), but the honorary Leap Day version was perhaps the funniest—and most bizarre. It showcased what 30 Rock did best, which was creating a super creepy alternate universe that somehow turned out not to be that creepy or alternate at all. For those of you who may not be as well-versed in Tina lore as the rest, a quick refresher on the Leap Day tale:
The holiday's patriarch is Leap Day William, a hobbit-y looking fellow who wears a blue and yellow suit and a Colonel Sanders mustache. He lives in the Mariana Trench and emerges every for years to trade children's tears for candy. In other words, he's a hero.
This special holiday also provides the opportunity to learn a few valuable lessons:
1. Nothing that happens on Leap Day counts. Go crazy, kids.
2. It's also an extra day to do business, if you get off on things like more profit opportunities (cough Jack Donaghy).
3. Be one the lookout for special occasions to take advantage of, like an old high school classmate offering you millions of dollars to take their virginity or finding a $50,000 Benihana gift certificate on the day before it expires.
4. Always wear yellow and blue, lest you be poked in the eye by everyone you see who is a better Leap Day celebrator than you are.
5. Eat rhubarb. But only the red leaves.
6. Be on the lookout for the all-day USA marathon of Leap Dave Williams, the movie about uptight lawyer Dave Williams turning into Leap Dave Williams after an ice fishing trip gone awry.
And finally, when the sun sets on your Leap Day, just remember these words: Live every day as if it's Leap Day, and every Leap Day as if it's your last.
