Larry Busacca/Getty Images for GlamourCaitlyn Jenner's priority is to reach out and help those in the transgender community become more comfortable, but while she has become a quasi-spokeswoman for the LGBT movement, she admits that it starts with image.
As one of Time magazine's runners-up for its annual Person of the Year award, Jenner gives a revealing interview in which she talks about image, reality TV and her journey to come clean about her identity. While she isn't focused on her appearance 100 percent of the time, she admits that it's important to look the part for the sake of others.
"One thing that has always been important for me, and it may seem very self-absorbed or whatever, is first of all your presentation of who you are. I think it's much easier for a trans woman or a trans man who authentically kind of looks and plays the role. So what I call my presentation," she explains in the magazine.
"I try to take that seriously. I think it puts people at ease. If you're out there and, to be honest with you, if you look like a man in a dress, it makes people uncomfortable. So the first thing I can do is try to present myself well.
"I want to dress well," she adds. "I want to look good."
Jenner admits it was hard at first to get her message out because of her family and its involvement with reality TV, but after I Am Cait she believes that people better understand what she is trying to do and doubt her intentions less.
"Like I tell my girls, I'm your dad. I'm always going to be your dad, you know? They still call me Daddy. They can call me Daddy all day long. I have no problem with that. I'll be your daddy till the day you die," she says.
"I'm not the one who really gets hung up on the pronouns and all. People make mistakes all the time. I get it. And Kendall [Jenner] goes, ‘You've always been my dad, how can I call you something else?' Call me Dad. I don't care. I've got no problem with that."
Coming from a ton of success already, Jenner adds that she's aware of her powerful platform but isn't going to make an excuse for it; in fact, she'll use it to her advantage.
"I'm very proud of what I was able to accomplish in my life. But I'm also smart in the sense that I know how to use that to make everything better," she says. "And because of my position in life, maybe I can make a bigger and faster change of thinking in the world than someone who doesn't have a platform, so why not use it? So I'm going to use it to the hilt, of course I am."
