Eight months since Zayn Malik surprisingly departed One Direction, the group has finally found their newest member with the help of Jimmy Kimmel.
"We have some very exciting news for One Direction fans tonight. We are going to do something no band has ever done before, no band has ever had before. We are going to welcome a new member to the One Direction family," the late night talk show host announced on Thursday evening's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! as fans waited anxiously for the grand reveal.
"That new member is this potato. This is a Russet potato raised in a field among many others. We bought it at Ralph's. It cost 58 cents. It's a very ordinary, some might say humble, vegetable, but what this potato does not know is it is about to become the most famous potato in the world," he declared. "Members of the paparazzi will try to take pictures of it. Young girls will shriek when they see it. By this time tomorrow, this potato...might even be dating Ariana Grande."
So, did Kimmel's prophecy come to fruition? Absolutely.
Just as the 1D Potato was being introduced to the world, its social media presence sky rocketed. In less than 24 hours, the simple vegetable has acquired 13,000 Twitter followers and nearly 100,000 Instagram followers.
Not to mention, the new One Directioner is already hobnobbing among members of Hollywood's A-list circle, including selfies with The Boss' Melissa McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone and a round of Ketel One on the rocks with Kimmel backstage.
While we don't know who his romantic songstress of choice is just yet, the 1D Potato has already declared his position in the band—drummer.
"My whole life potatoes have been laughing at me, telling me I would never drum for @OneDirection," the spud captioned a photo of itself on a stool behind a 1D drum set. "Live your dreams kids! Who's laughing now?"
