According to ESPN, DeAngelo Williams of the Pittsburgh Steelers will pay for the mammograms of 53 women. Why 53, you ask? Williams chose the number to honor his mother, who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 53.
The mammogram tests will be purchased for women at a North Carolina hospital. Before Pittsburgh, Williams played for the Carolina Panthers.
The running back was denied his request to wear pink throughout the season in order to honor his mother who passed from breast cancer in May 2014.
Instead, Williams streaked his hair pink along with making the choice to buy the mammograms.
ESPN's Lisa Salters first mentioned his intention during the Monday Night Football broadcast. How did it feel to be told he can't wear pink accessories year-round to support those who have been affected by breast cancer? "The same way it made you feel after you heard it—like, man," he said. "[NFL vice president of football operations Troy Vincent] told me no. I'm assuming they are telling everybody else no as well...It wasn't about selling it. You know and I know and everybody else knows before I made the phone call."
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but Williams said, "It's not just about October for me; it's not just a month, it's a lifestyle. It's about getting women to recognize to get tested."
It's a touching tribute to not only his mother, but to breast cancer warriors everywhere.
