As news circulates that Heath Ledger's lifeless body was discovered near a bottle of sleeping pills, at least one friend says she now regrets not heeding his complaints in recent weeks about insomnia.

"I talked to him briefly several weeks ago, and he just said something about how he was having trouble sleeping," an insider reveals to E! Online special correspondent Tina Dirmann.

"Now, to hear all this news of him maybe overdosing on sleeping pills accidentally, I can't get that out of my head."

But at the time, it was hard to see the complaint as a warning sign. In fact, the source tells Dirmann, Heath often operated on little sleep.

"He's talked about having insomnia before, but it always just seemed like something caused by run-of-the mill work stress," the source says. "And maybe stuff with his breakup with Michelle awhile back. He could be kind of a reflective, pensive guy, generally."

Despite the complaints of not sleeping, Heath didn't seem overly upset, Dirmann is told.

"Nothing out of the ordinary," adds the friend. "His tone was pretty much upbeat, and he talked about getting together with some friends. He was just Heath."
