When the world thinks of Joan Rivers, they think of her humor and ability to make practically anybody laugh.

But friends and colleagues remember Joan for different reasons—her kind heart, her generosity and her amazing and admirable work ethic.

Friend and celebrity roaster Jeff Ross sat down with E! News to talk about his beloved pal, and couldn't help but praise not only the career of his fellow comic, but the person she was outside of the spotlight.

"She always had new material. A lot of comedians, they hit their later part of their career and they rest a little bit. They do a greatest hits act. She was always fresh. She always had a new take on new subjects, and I don't know anybody else you could say was relevant into their eighties," Ross tells us.

He continued, "You always wanted to hear what she had to say. She's one of those people you feel is like your aunt or something when you meet her. She touches you when she talks to you. She was very affectionate. I think she showed comedians how hard it is to be great. She was a living work in progress. She was never finished. She was always on to the next one."

Ross went on to share some of his fondest memories with Joan, including a time he teamed up with her for Howard Stern's birthday roast.

"Howard Stern asked us to roast him for his 60th birthday, and they asked me if I'd be willing to team up and do it with Joan, and wow, what an honor for me! I know it's Howard's birthday but it feels like my comedy bar mitzvah," he laughed. But the best part? He met an iconic woman who was willing to listen to his ideas.
