Britney in a "Volatile Mood" Before Hospital

Insider tells E! News Brit was awake four days, "cleaning excessively" and "screaming and yelling" in house

As Britney Spears unwinds under a doctor's care, the story of how she got from A to Bed Rest continues to emerge.

While sources have confirmed that, when the time came, Spears compliantly let herself be transported to UCLA Medical Center by ambulance in the wee hours Thursday, the day leading up to the carefully planned intervention wasn't so peaceful.

"Early Wednesday afternoon, Britney was screaming and yelling in the house," a source close to the family told E! News exclusively, adding that the troubled pop star had been wide awake even longer than previously thought.

Britney was in a "volatile mood" after not sleeping for four days straight, "cleaning excessively" and wanting to drive around town (which she obviously did), the source said.

As for Lynne Spears, who reunited with her oft estranged daughter for the first time in months on Monday after the singer's fight with confidant Sam Lutfi, she was apparently reluctant to return to Spears' house after hearing that members of her inner circle were planning on having the 26-year-old hospitalized, a plan she was initially opposed to.

"Lynne didn't want to come over earlier, because she was getting a manicure," the family insider told E! News. "Britney's relationship with her mom is touch and go."

Also, Lynne "doesn't believe the rumors that [Adnan Ghalib] is trying to exploit her daughter," the source said, further evidence that the Spears family appears to be divided along a Ghalib-Lutfi fault line.

But despite Jamie and Lynne Spears' suspicions about Lutfi, whom they at first barred from the waiting room after riding to the hospital with Ghalib in the backseat, it's Brit's producer pal who, E! News is told, really has her best interests at heart.

"Sam has been the only one around her 24/7, he understands her and she trusts him more than anyone else," the source said. "He's getting a bad rap," but "he's what's kept her alive. Sam wants the family to be there for Britney, but he feels they do not understand the full extent of what's going on in her life."

Meanwhile, Jamie Lynn Spears, who has been hunkered down in Louisiana since revealing she was pregnant, wants her big sister to come home.

"Jamie is a big advocate of Britney coming to Louisiana," E! News' source said. "But Britney won't leave because of her babies."

Spears hasn't seen her two children since she refused to hand Jayden James over to Kevin Federline's bodyguard during a bizarre standoff with police Jan. 3, after which she lost her visitation rights. Family court gave her permission to call the boys last week, and another hearing is scheduled for Monday.

The Crossroads star underwent a psychological evaluation Thursday morning at UCLA, where she has been placed on a 5150 (a potential danger to others) hold, to determine whether she should be ordered to spend the maximum 72 hours under observation.

A source close to the situation told E! News Spears is finally sleeping and that doctors will be monitoring her situation over the next few days.
