Tom Cruise Takes Manhattan

Tom Cruise launches New York media blitz on Late Show, claiming he and Holmes will marry this summer and describing daughter's birth as "surreal"

The Late Show with David Letterman may not have featured any Stupid Human Tricks on Tuesday night's show, but it did have Tom Cruise as a guest.

The Mission: Impossible III star shared some couch time with the CBS host in an uncharacteristically toned-down TV appearance--during his segment, anyway--in which he dished about his new daughter Suri and his bride-to-be.

"Kate and I can't take our eyes off of her," Cruise said of his two-week-old offspring, insinuating, it would seem, that the jet-setting actor has actually managed to nab face time with the newborn despite seemingly nonstop promotional tours in Europe, Mexico and the U.S.

"She's a beauty--it's crazy," he said, before talking about her delivery. "It's exciting and kind of surreal because, all of a sudden, it's happening. Suddenly there's going to be this other person, and I found myself wanting to relish every moment and not forget it."

Cruise also said that the birth, silent or not, didn't take long. "It happened quickly," he said.

The couch-hopper also relayed that daughter Suri is currently tipping the scales at 7 pounds, 10 ounces, has a lot of hair and is in good hands with mama Holmes, who's being assisted in his absence by both actors' mothers.

But before Cruise was allowed to gush anymore, he was interrupted by Letterman, who reminded Cruise of their joint status as unwed baby-daddies.

"By the way, you're not married," said Letterman.

"Did you have to bring it up?" said Cruise, apparently forgetting that he has documented every second of his relationship with Holmes for TV cameras. He then added, "I can't wait to get married."

He said that he and Holmes plan on making it official this summer, though he failed to reveal any further details on the where and when of the vow swap.

And Cruise didn't let the interview wrap without waxing superlative about his fiancée.

"She's magnificent," he said of Holmes. "She has done so well...an incredible woman."

Of course, no Cruise guest spot is complete without a wildcard moment--which the actor delivered during a cooking segment with Jamie Oliver. Cruise first pretended to guzzle cooking oil, and then, after Letterman actually ingested the liquid, Cruise took the bottle and started chugging.

"I don't feel that good," Letterman said. "I feel kind of bilious...It means full of bile."

The Late Show stop--during which Cruise did manage to mention the movie and the fact that he broke six ribs while making it--was just the beginning of Cruise's PR blitz of Manhattan.

The Mission: Impossible man kicked off a whirlwind tour of New York Wednesday by answering audience questions at Good Morning America.

"It will be intense today," he said on GMA. "This is a Mission: Impossible day. I got the briefing from, you know, my gang at Paramount. They are like, 'You have to be on that train at such and such a time.'...I just wanted to kick off summer with Mission: Impossible."

He then appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly, where he shared the news that he and Holmes are completely transfixed by Suri--even when she passes gas. When asked about the division of labor, Cruise said Holmes handles the feeding chores and he's in charge of diaper duty.

Cruise will spend the rest of the day zigzagging New York, including attending three different screenings of Mission: Impossible III, culminating with the film's official U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. He'll then head home to L.A. for a screening of the movie on Thursday at Grauman's Chinese Theater. The film opens wide Friday.

So far the reviews have been decent. Daily Variety says that Cruise & Co. serve up a "high-octane" movie "that will serve its purpose in getting Paramount's--and the industry's---summer [box-office] season off to a bang-up start."

The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, says that "whether he is leaping talk-show couches or exploding bridges, Cruise brings a hyper-intensity to Ethan Hunt" but offers one caveat: "The breathless pace, complete with ticking deadline, leaves little room for reason. That is just as well, with the story moving deeper into incoherence with every explosion." (There's one for the posters.)

In his quest to ensure that every last human being goes to see the sequel, Cruise will continue his jet-setting promotional tour well into next week. As part of a national contest, the actor will attend a private screening of the film in Aberdeen, Washington, Tuesday for a one-on-one fan viewing in a local mall.
