On the bright side for Lyle Lovett: This experience could inspire thousands of new country songs.

The Grammy-winning crooner and former hubby of Julia Roberts was trampled by a bull Wednesday at his uncle's farm in Houston. Lovett suffered a broken leg, but was reportedly in good condition following the incident.

Lovett was still listed as a patient Thursday at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Officials there would not comment on his exact condition, but Lovett's tour manager, James Gilmer, told Reuters, "He's got a broken leg, but he'll be back out there playing shows before you know it."

The 44-year-old singer underwent a two-hour surgery on his lower right leg to reconstruct the bone, which had been broken in numerous places. Dr. Kevin Coupe, who performed the surgery, told the Houston Chronicle that 20 pieces of bone were broken in Lovett's leg, including nine major bone fragments.

"It's a bad injury," Coupe said, adding that Lovett may remain in the hospital for three days, and that full recovery could take at least six months.

Coupe said that Lovett, who also broke his right thumb, had gotten pinned between the bull's head and a fence after rushing to the aid of his uncle, who had been flipped by the animal while working on his farm.

Lovett's uncle, Calvin Klein (not the designer), 67, suffered trauma to the chest and was briefly hospitalized.

This isn't Lovett's first harrowing experience. In 1995, he broke his collarbone while riding a motorcycle in Baja, Mexico.

Lovett, born in Klein, Texas, is perhaps better known for his vocal prowess, with hits including "San Antonio Girl" and "If I Were the Man You Wanted." He's also picked up Grammys for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1989 for his album Lyle Lovett And His Large Band and Best Country Album in 1996 for The Road to Ensenada, among others. And he's been a favorite of director Robert Altman, who's cast him in The Player, Short Cuts, Ready to Wear (Pret-a-Porter) and Cookie's Fortune.

Among tabloid readers, Lovett is best remembered for his short-lived nuptial fling with Roberts. The pair, who both appeared in The Player, were married in 1993 and divorced two years later.
