Kevin Costner may be saddling up again as John Dutton after all.
While Yellowstone is coming to an end later this year, the star of the Paramount Network Western expressed hope that he'll play the Montana rancher once more.
"I'd like to be able to do it but we haven't been able to," Costner told Entertainment Tonight in an interview released April 9. "I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we're at five."
Last spring, Paramount Network surprised fans by announcing Yellowstone would come to an end after five seasons—with the latter being split into two parts. At the same time, it was confirmed it was announced that the Western drama's universe—which features several spinoffs—was expanding further with a direct follow-up show. And Costner can see the roads from the spinoffs leading back to John Dutton.
"So how it works out—I hope it does—but they've got a lot of different shows going on," the Oscar winner told ET. "Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I'd love to do it."
As for how his character's journey ends? The Waterworld star also said that he had had conversations with franchise creator Taylor Sheridan about how Dutton's story would end.
"He needs to be proactive in what happens and I've kind of had my own fantasy how it might be," Costner said, "but that's Taylor's thing. I said as much to him a while back."
For his part, Sheridan shared insight into his perspective on Costner's decision to leave and how they went about crafting his final scenes.
"My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct," Sheridan told the Hollywood Reporter last year. "He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone. I said, 'We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],' which we did."
Adding that he was "disappointed," the writer explained, "It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn't alter it, but it truncates it."
The final episodes of Yellowstone are set to premiere on the Paramount Network this November.
