Charlize Theron and her boyfriend, Stuart Townsend, have no problem walking the red carpet at the DNC in Denver to promote his movie, Battle in Seattle—but walking down the aisle is a whole other story.

E! News caught up with Townsend Tuesday at a screening of the political film he directed and quizzed him on whether he and Theron, both Obama supporters, would now marry, given that Theron once said that she wouldn't wed until gay marriage was legalized. (California has legalized same-sex unions.)

"I think she said 'nationwide,' " Townsend joked. "I don’t think she mentioned 'state.' I want everyone to know that was her thing. I do believe that if you love someone you should be able to get married, but it's got nothing to do with my life or her life."

Laughing, he added, "I love her. What more do you want? We are happy. Leave us alone!"
