The erstwhile Nash Bridges, who hasn't appeared in a big-budget Hollywood film since 1996's Tin Cup, has signed on to play Kristen Bell's dad in Disney's upcoming romantic comedy When in Rome.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the flick centers around a young art curator (Bell) who's bombarded by a slew of wannabe suitors that magically fall for her after she steals coins the strangers toss into a Roman fountain.
That's not the only paternal part for Johnson.
The 58-year-old thesp will also play the father of Saturday Night Live castmember Jason Sudeikis' character in Orgy, a comedy about a bunch of thirtysomethings who throw an end-of-summer party in the Hamptons.
After Nash Bridges ended its five-season run in 2001, Johnson continued on the tube, headlining the dramedy Just Legal for one season. Following that show's cancellation, he crossed the pond for roles in three European films.
Meanwhile, Entourage star Adrian Grenier has enlisted a variety of Tinseltown stars to be interviewed for Teenage Paparazzi. It's a documentary he's writing and directing exploring his relationship with a 14-year-old budding photographer who once took his photo as well as society's increasing fascination with fame.
Among the celebs offering up their thoughts on those pesky shutterbugs are Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Baldwin, Martin Landau, Eva Longoria Parjer and Rosie O'Donnell, along with sit-downs with Daily Show comic Lewis Black and noted linguist, best-selling author and social critic Noam Chomsky.
In other casting news:
- After guest starring in a three-episode arc of The Big Bang Theory, Sara Gilbert will now join the cast of the CBS sitcom as a regular. The actress will reprise her role as know-it-all Leslie Winkle, who's the love interest to Leonard, played by Johnny Galecki. The two formerly worked together when the latter played Gilbert's boyfriend on ABC's Roseanne. The Big Bang Theory's second season kicks off Sept. 22.
- Former Traveler star Matthew Bomer has come aboard USA Network's 90-minute pilot White Collar, about a brilliant con man who is forced to team up with the head of the FBI's white-collar crime unit to solve cases.
- It's not quite casting, but trades report ABC Studios has entered into talks with Lost stars Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly regarding upping their paychecks from $80,000 to $90,000 per episode to about $150,000 per episode—a substantial pay raise.
- And last but not least, Salma Hayek's TV production company, Ventanarosa, which produces ABC's hit Ugly Betty, is developing an hourlong reality series that would offer up a "unique take" on weddings.
