With a little digital makeup (and some nail polish on his finger, natch) our Slinky-necked outer-space friend is returning for another visit. And the sappy should be happy, because E.T's ability to enchant holds up. Director Steven Spielberg, with the technological advances of moviemaking at his disposal, has spruced up this classic alien-befriends-kid story, beefing up the soundtrack and adding an originally cut, cute bathroom scene.
He has also P.C.-ed the film by taking the guns away from the bad guys--replacing them with Walkie-Talkies--and other small changes you'll barely notice. What you will notice, though, is that the magic is still there after all these years, thanks mainly to the youthful wonderment of Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore. Yes, li'l E.T.'s heart light still burns bright. Now, feel free to go sob in your popcorn.
