ESC: Must Do Monday, Olivia Munn

Has your hair color lost its luster? You're not alone.

About 70 percent of American women dye their hair either at home or in a salon, according to a 2015 story in The Atlantic. That's a lot of money and time waiting for bleach to strip your hair only for artificial pigments to re-fill your strands. The end result? Confidence...until your highlights start to grow out and your tresses begin to split, dry out and just look drab. Luckily, hair masks were invented to bring much-needed proteins and amino acids back into your hair. Unluckily, quality hair masks—even the best hair mask of 2017—can cost upwards of $40.

But Dove celebrity colorist Cassondra Kaeding—you've seen her work on Olivia Munn, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Dorit Kemsley—says you don't need a star's bank account to nourish your hair. In fact, you can use drugstore conditioner to treat your tresses.

ESC: Dove Conditioner

Actually, the hair pro sometimes advises clients from overusing hair masks, as the strands can only hold so much...just like how your skin can only absorb so much product before the excess is ineffective. "Less is more. Don't overdo with too much protein," said Cassondra. "Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing." Think: limp locks.

Instead, using a conditioner to coat your hair for five to 15 minutes may be all the nourishment you need.

"The [Dove Color Care Conditioner ($6)] has coconut oil, so you can use it as a hair mask," she advised. "It has dual purposes," including elongating the life of your color-treated hair.

Coconut oil contains fatty and lauric acids that can penetrate the hair shaft while promote mineral and vitamin production.

Is this a must-do? For $6, it's worth a try.
