It's Friday, which means a lot of you are preparing to go out and maybe (probably) get your drink on tonight—as you should!
But before you begin your boozing, you might want to consider adding something to your smartphone to help lessen the chances of waking up tomorrow with both a hangover and regrets.
There's a free app called Drunk Mode, and it's functions are primarily to help those participating in an alcohol-filled night of shenanigans come out of it unscathed, both physically and emotionally. Finally, someone in the tech world is lookin' out.
The app, which currently has over 500,000 users and counting, has four main features. What are they? We're glad you asked!
"Find My Drunk" is a GPS to track drunk friends to help keep both you and your friends safe, "Stop Drunk Dialing" blocks selected contacts so they're hidden from drunken you (so necessary!), "Breadcrumbs" tracks your night in case you lost something and need to re-trace your steps the next day and "Find A Ride" is the app's newest feature that lets users easily find an Uber or Lyft.
So how did this creation even come about?! It's all thanks to a girl's drunk dial.
E! News learns that Joshua Anton, the founder of Drunk Mode, had a girl he had a crush on drunk dial him during his time at University of Virginia. The next afternoon, he went and interviewed 100 folks and asked them if they would use an app that stopped them from drunk dialing.
SHOCKER! They said yes. That idea eventually became Drunk Mode.
While drunk dialing seems to be the most common mistake made by drinkers, Chief Communications Officer Jake Ellenburg tells us "Find my Drunk" became their most popular feature, with its ability to help users find their friends that might have had a few too many and wandered off.
He also explains that there's more to come for the app. Drunk Mode will soon update "Find my Drunk" so you can add users in your area, who might not be in your contact list.
Also, an additional feature called "Hotspots" will show users where it's on and poppin'. The more Drunk Moders in an area, the hotter the spot, letting users know before they go out if the bar or club is worth the trip.
And with that, happy (and safe!) drinking.
