Marc JacobsAdidas is experiencing a serious case of déjà vu.
Just as Nike is known for its iconic swoosh, Adidas lays claim to a slick set of three stripes as one of its chief identifiers. Now, imagine the athletic retailer's surprise when they noticed a certain Marc by Marc Jacobs design featuring a very similar set of red stripes from the brand's most recent collection.
We imagine the reaction was along the lines of: Oh no they didn't!
Fashionista first reported on the lawsuit—filed in the U.S. District Court in Oregon—which claimed Adidas is suing for unfair competition, deceptive trade practices, trademark infringement and dilution over a set of sweaters with similar sleeve stripes. While the garments in question have four stripes, not Adidas' token three, the resemblance between the two stripe sets is pretty apparent.
It's worth noting that Marc by Marc Jacobs is not the designer's main line and is set to be discontinued, according to WWD. The offshoot will be absorbed into the larger Marc Jacobs brand.
The lawsuit comes not long after American Apparel collaborator Kesh claimed that Versace copied his black-and-white graphic-print tees, part of a capsule collection for the Los Angeles-brand. And before that, legendary stylist Rachel Zoe landed in haute water herself when allegations were made that she ripped off a Valentino frock.
But back to the matter at hand: The stripes do look alike. What's up with all this copy-catting, folks?
