Rita Wilson revealed Tuesday that she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has already undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. In a statement to E! News, Wilson explained her situation in full and urged women to always seek a second opinion.
"I have taken a leave from the play Fish in the Dark to deal with a personal health issue. Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma," the "Girls Night In" singer said. "I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion."
Stars quickly turned to Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms to show their support for Hanks' wife. During their hour on Today, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb took a moment to wish their friend well.
"We want to send our love to a good friend of ours, Rita Wilson," Gifford said. "We didn't know what she had been battling recently."
The Today show hosts also tweeted their support, writing, "Sending our love to @RitaWilson who had a double mastectomy after her breast cancer diagnosis."
Other stars including John Stamos, LeAnn Rimes Cibrian and more have also tweeted their support for the actress.
