OK, so we all know the story of Sid from Toy Story. He's the little kid who tortured and experimented on toys like a deranged sociopath. Or an adolescent boy, whichever label you prefer. He blew the toys up and set them on fire and pulled them apart and put them back together with other toy parts. Remember the giant baby head on metal legs? That is what nightmares are made of.
Sid learned his lesson in the end, though. He was scared s--tless by the very toys he loved to torture:
After he ran screaming from Woody's warning to "play nice," we never heard from him again.
Until Toy Story 3.
It's never been confirmed, but the garbage man in Toy Story 3 is widely believed to be Sid as an adult. The evidence is there in the skull T-shirt (Pixar doesn't put things in their movies by accident):
Now, most people think that Sid becoming a garbage man was "getting what he deserved," since collecting garbage isn't exactly seen as a glamorous position.
But Reddit user londongarbageman has a different theory about Sid's outcome:
"In Toy Story 1 Sid is confronted with horrifying revelation that his toys are alive. 15 years later in Toy Story 3 we see that Sid has become the local Garbageman. Now being a garbageman has one of the biggest perks that you may not have realized. We find things. Lots of things," he wrote.
Being a garbage man himself, londongarbageman talked about all the toys he has found in the trash: Legos, Nerf guns, Barbies, etc. So his theory is this: What if Sid becoming a garbage man was his way of righting his wrongs with the toys?
"Now, let's imagine you're a guy who just learned that inanimate objects are alive. What job would you get?" he asked. "Sid isn't f--ked up and working a crappy job. He's trying to save them. He is trying to save the toys.He picked the one kind of job where you can rescue those things. And Sid is uniquely equipped to fix those toys that he finds that are broken. He's pretty damn creative."
Sid's ending wasn't a punishment. It was a choice. He's saving the broken and thrown-out toys! When you watch the video, you do notice that Sid doesn't seem miserable in his position. If viewers were meant to revel in the fact that the toy torturer got stuck in a filthy job, wouldn't Sid look kind of sad and downtrodden?
Not if he's living a life saving the toys! This ending for Sid is beautifully poetic, so we're just going to choose to believe in it fully.
