New photos of famous music producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector have been released, five years after he was sentenced for the second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson, and one of them shows the 74-year-old smiling.

He is currently serving a prison sentence of 19 years to life in California. New pics of Spector, who had revolutionized music in the 1960s with his "Wall of Sound" production techniques and has worked with iconic groups such as The Beatles and The Ramones, were released by the state's Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation on Wednesday. The reason for their publication was not provided.

One of the photos (seen above), shows Spector smiling at the camera and was taken at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, in Corcoran, California on July 24, 2013.

A second pic (see below), shows him with a neutral facial expression, is dated Oct. 28, 2013 and was taken at the California Health Care Facility in Stockton, California, where inmates who "have the most severe and long term needs" receive medical care and mental health treatment, according to its official website. Prison officials have not revealed details about Spector's health.

Both images show him to be balding. Spector was known for his elaborate hairstyles and had worn wigs during his 2009 trial, the second for the case. His first trial, which took place in 2007, ended in a mistrial when the jury was deadlocked.

Spector also appeared without a wig in a mug shot the California Department of Corrections released in June 2009, following his sentencing for second-degree murder of Clarkson, 40.

The two had met at a Hollywood nightclub on Feb. 3, 2003 and hours later, she was found dead of a gunshot to her mouth in his home near the city. The producer's legal team had maintained that Clarkson died of an accidental suicide.
