Eddie Redmayne of Les Miserables fame is almost uncognizable as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything in the first trailer for the new movie.

The autobiographical, inspirational film showcases the world-renowned British physicist's life, including his relationship with Jane Wilde, who would become his first wife in 1965, and how, at age 21, he began to experience symptoms of a paralyzing motor neuron disease that put him in a wheelchair and rendered him unable to talk. Doctors told Hawking he had two years to live and would never speak again.

"But I love him and he loves me. We're going to fight this illness together," Wilde, played by Felicity Jones, says in the trailer.

The real Hawking, one of the world's most famous scientists, is now 72 years old. He uses a computerized voice box to communicate. He and his first wife had three children and divorced in 1995, after which he married Elaine Mason. They split in 2006.

Hawking met Redmayne, best known for his role as hunky Marius in the 2012 musical film Les Miserables, when he visited the set of The Theory of Everything in Cambridge, outside of London. Hawking had obtained his Ph.D at the University of Cambridge and later became the school's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.

The Theory of Everything is set for release on Nov. 7 in the United States and Jan. 1, 2015 in the United Kingdom and also stars Emily WatsonDavid Thewlis (Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films), Charlie Cox (Boardwalk Empire) and Harry Lloyd ("golden crowned" Viserys Targaryen in Game of Thrones).
