American Horror Story, Coven

Talk about wicked good numbers.

American Horror Story: Coven's premiere on Wednesday night broke the FX franchise's ratings record, bringing in 5.54 million viewers with a 3.0 rating in the demo. That makes it the most-watched telecast ever for Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's anthology series.

Even more impressive? Those numbers are a double-digit gain over the previous record, which was 3.85 million viewers. Plus, the episode, cheekily  titled "Bitchcraft," broke its 18-49 demo record (3.87 million) and its best in the 18-34 demo (2.34 million).

We guess witches really are the new black!

And viewers aren't the only ones loving the witchin' third season, as Murphy recently revealed that he's been in talks with FX about potentially spinning Coven off into its own series. "[Coven] is my favorite season that we've done so far," Murphy spilled. "Every season, I get very sad when I say goodbye to and we tear down those sets. But [FX president] John Landgraf, to be quite clear, and I have always spoke about that this is a show that's sort of right to spin things off. To do something different. So we are talking about it."

While season two of AHS, subtitled Asylum, was very dark, Murphy said he wanted this season to be fun, explaining, "This year was designed to be scary but more, I think, fun. I heard a lot last year, 'I love it but it's hard to sit through.' So I wanted this year to be easier to sit through. A little more light."

In Coven's next episode, Fiona (Jessica Lange) will help Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) and Madison (Emma Roberts) deal with the aftermath of the horrible tragedy which took Kyle's (Evan Peters) life, while Madam LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) has a hard time adjusting to modern life. American Horror Story: Coven airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX.
