Puppy Doe's heartbreaking story captivated America. She was a young pit bull who was savagely beaten, stabbed, burned and tortured, before being dumped in Quincy, Mass. She had suffered so much abuse that ultimately she had to be put down.

But her legacy is inspiring change: Already, Boston Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and some of his coworkers have authored the Protecting Animal Welfare and Safety Act (or "PAWS" Act), which would create an animal abuse registry that would block those persons from adopting in the future and beef up penalties for offenders.

"It's clear there are some folks that this is not an isolated incident," Tarr explained. "That's one of the concerning things about the Puppy Doe case. There seems to be a pattern of torture."

Thankfully, Mama Jade's story ended differently than Puppy Doe's.

Last Friday, a pit bull happened to wander up to the home of an animal hospital employee. The pit bull has since been named Mama Jade and her rescuer posted her story on Craiglist with the subject, "Your pitbull found me and I'm not giving her back" (H/T Gawker).

"Signs of the abuse she had somehow escaped, riddled her body," she writes. "The fresh bite marks on her muzzle, the scars that covered her body...She was obviously tied up with ropes that cut their way into her skin...The obvious signs that she had been bred, relentlessly, time after time."

The post goes on the explain that her teeth had been pulled out and those that were left were filed down. "You did this so she couldn't fight back. You did this so she couldn't injure any dogs you had trained to fight, when you threw her in there with them," the ad says.

But all Mama Jade wanted was love. "The first night, I stayed up with her and every time I'd move, she'd get up and look at me with worry stricken eyes. She didn't want me to leave her."

It continues, "Mama lets you get right up in her face. In fact, she LOVES it. She'll give you slobbery kisses and nuzzle your face with love. We're all amazed at how trusting of humans she is. Dogs however, completely terrify her…But who can blame her?"

Mama Jade was originally supposed to be put down, as she suffers from cancer ("we initially decided it would be best to humanly euthanize her because she had already experienced so much pain in her life"), but now she has a second chance.

"Never would I have thought my Craigslist post about Mama Jade would go completely viral…I have received LITERALLY thousands of emails from people all around the United States," Mama Jade's rescuer explained on Facebook

It continues, "Many people and charities have asked if they could donate funds for Mama to get the treatment for her cancer...One thing is for certain though, Mama Jade is getting yet another chance at life :)"

Keep checking Mama Jade's Facebook page to find out how to donate.

As for Mama's rescuer, she says, "Many have e-mailed me with incredible words of support, calling me an "angel" or a "hero" and although it warms my heart, at the same time it makes me sad. I was just doing what any person with a pulse would (or apparently should) do if they encountered an animal that desperately needed help."

She concluded, "The world would be a much better place if people could just take a moment out of their busy lives, to help a creature that can do nothing for you in return."
