The rapper traveled to Kazakhstan over the Labor Day holiday weekend where he was the entertainment for the evening—and for a reported price tag of $3 million—at the wedding of the grandson of the country's longtime president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Photographer Helena Gadjilova posted footage on Instagram of the 36-year-old West serenading the bride and groom, Alima Boranbayeva and Aysultan Nazarbayev, at their nuptials, which per the Kazakh news agency Tengrinews (via The New York Times), took place at the Royal Tulip hotel in Almaty on Saturday night. There are also shots that went up online showing fans posing for pictures in front of Yeezy.
Neither a publicist for West nor Gadjilova could be reached for comment.
But by agreeing to play for what is ostensibly the leader of an autocratic government with a poor human rights record, Kanye is no doubt opening himself up to criticism that he's cozying up to a dictator in the same way that Jennifer Lopez took heat for singing "Happy Birthday" to Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in July.
Other music stars who've come under fire for taking big money for private performances on behalf of some of the world's most notorious rulers include Usher, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, all of whom played for late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. After the backlash, they subsequently donated their fees to charity.
