Lena Dunham did it because Hilary Swank didn't.
That's the short answer as to why Dunham thanked Chad Lowe in her acceptance speech at Sunday's 70th Annual Golden Globes.
The long answer is pretty short, too.
"Because Hilary Swank forgot. And because I'm an a--hole," the Girls creator and star confessed to the Globes backstage press.
The object of her thank you approved.
"YOU COMPLETE ME," Lowe tweeted to his "dearest."
Lowe, the younger brother of actor Rob Lowe, was famously not thanked by then-wife Swank as he wept tears of joy upon her Best Actress win for Boys Don't Cry at the 2000 Oscars. Five years later, Swank did acknowledge Lowe upon the occasion of her second win, for Million Dollar Baby, but the image of the snub stuck.
Especially with Dunham.
"I also promised myself that if I ever got this chance, I would thank Chad Lowe," Dunham said on stage Sunday.
Lowe seemed to view the namecheck as an opportunity. Just not of the career variety.
Wrote Lowe in another tweet: "Now that I'm trending worldwide (finally) does that mean I don't have to give my daughters a bath or change their diapers anymore?"
